Employees Rights Explained

Employees have rights in the work place and it is important for all employees to understand their rights as well as their responsibilities. The policy of equal rights without discrimination should also be understood by all employees and employers in order to avoid unfair practices in the work place.

On getting a job, an employee is entitled to get their written contract within two months. This contract should include all the details of the job. This includes work hours, responsibilities, details of pay, as well as entitlement regarding leave. Having a written contract is necessary so that both parties are clear about the details of the job.

Having rights makes it possible for employees to take legal action if there is a breach of contract or a violation of any rights. There are agencies that can give UK employment law advice and many of these can also help employees take necessary legal action.

Many lawsuits in this field are related to health and safety, or rather the lack thereof. It is the employers' responsibility to make sure the workplace is not unsafe. This is a legal duty and a breach of this responsibility is a legal offence.

If an employee feels that they have been dismissed in an unfair manner, they can opt to fight the decision and take the matter to court. Upon winning, the employee is usually entitled to monetary compensation. Matters related to employment are dealt with in a special court known as the employment tribunal.
